Highlights

  • Landslide election: In the September 1936 general election the Social Democrats won 45.9% of the vote and 112 seats, their best result to date; after a brief Agrarian 'summer government', Per Albin Hansson formed a new coalition that would govern Sweden through World War II.
  • Berlin Olympics: Sweden ranked 7th overall with 6 gold, 5 silver, and 9 bronze medals; the wrestling team claimed four golds and Torsten Ullman won the 50 m free pistol shooting event.
  • Mästermyr chest found: In October 1936 a Viking-Age tool chest was accidentally unearthed in the Mästermyr bog on Gotland — the largest Iron-Age tool find in Europe, now preserved at the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm.
