Reading the century
Editorial · context for the table aboveOne hundred consecutive cabinets, three political families, and a single thread: the question of who is responsible for the welfare of the population. The grid above is the briefest possible answer — a year-by-year ledger of who held the door.
The Social Democrats governed for nearly three-quarters of the century. The bourgeois bloc — the Centre Party, the Liberals, and the Moderates, sometimes alone, more often in coalition — held it for the remainder. The numbers below count cabinet years, not election victories.
